The shared world vision for hygiene, sanitation and water supply for the new millennium recognizes hygiene conditions and adequate access to safe water and sanitation services as a fundamental right. This continues to be challenging as community WASH programmes do not adequately address hygiene promotion alongside hardware. Universal primary education in many developing countries has resulted in significant increase in schools enrolment but with inadequate facilities and little hygiene, thus affecting learning environment. This has resulted in continued spread of water and sanitation related diseases even where facilities exist. The combination of improved facilities, correct behavioural practices and education in Schools and Communities are meant to have a positive impact on the health and hygiene conditions of the children and the community as a whole, both now and in the future. Domestic hygiene further contributes towards a sustained behavior change.
The course on “Sustainable WASH in Schools and in Communities”, will enhance awareness on how to create more effective WASH Programmes. Focus will be on creating conducive learning environment as well as planning and implementing improvements in Schools and Communities. The course also seeks to bring about the new awareness of the complex interaction between behavioural and technological elements in schools and communities.
