One of the major challenges facing water utilities in the developing world is the high level of water losses—from physical losses (leakage), theft of water from the system, or because water users are not being properly billed. This difference between the amount of water put into the distribution system and the amount of water billed to consumers is known as ―Non Revenue Water (NRW). This has a serious effect on the financial viability of water utilities through lost revenue, lost water resources, and increased operational costs, reducing their capacity to fund necessary expansions of service, especially for the poor. High levels of NRW also affect the water utilities’ ability to increase connections and expand service coverage. Aging infrastructure, financial constraints, poor governance, and poor project design all aggravate NRW management.

This training aims at enabling the participants to be familiar with the concepts and approaches of non revenue water management and reduction approaches of water utilities to enhance the financial and environmental sustainability. Also, this course deals with background and definitions of terminologies used in water loss management (unaccounted-for water, non-revenue water, unavoidable annual real losses), performance indicators (ILI, ELL, ELI), different approaches for real loss and apparent loss control and state of the art techniques and equipments used in leakage detection and control in the distribution system.

This course is designed for staff who deal with customers and meter readers on a daily basis, senior and middle level managers and operators responsible for development of strategies for NRW reduction from water utilities and local/municipal authorities/ water service providers.

The course fee is USD 1,480, which covers tuition, course file and materials, a field visit and a certificate of participation. Accommodation is USD 780 for the two weeks.
